My name is Kurt Edwins and I was born on a rural farm near Charleston, SC.  At the age of 28 I finally told my Mom I was gay.  It took some time for her to accept this but she came around, accepted me, and loved me none the less. Her family, for the most part are radical Independent Fundamental Southern Baptist.  You have no idea how biblically abused I was growing up around that side of the family.  She knew that they would never accept me and always told me not to worry.  As long as I am around they will not hurt your.  Not very long after I came out, Mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor that was malignant.  With 14 months mom passed away and was buried in her parent’s private cemetery in St Matthews, SC.  Within a year of her passing I called my Grand Parents (Mom's parents) and told them that I was looking forward to coming home for Thanksgiving.  Sadly I was told that I was no longer welcome due to my sexuality.  Since that time the pain of visiting her grave has overwhelmed me to the point that I was not able to go and even place flowers on her grave.

This Christmas, with my Grandfather nearing death, I decided to reach out to the family and try and make amends.  I was ready to move on and forget about the past.  Unfortunately they were not.  They were ready to meet with me and offer scripture reading, therapy, and a myriad of other conversations to further cleanse me of my sickness.  It was at this point that I knew nothing was ever going to change.

I am asking for your support so that I can exhume my mother’s grave and relocate her gravesite to my father's family cemetery that is located just outside of Holly Hill, SC.  This would bring both her and me a great deal of happiness. I know that she see's the pain this has caused me and would want nothing more for me to do than to put flowers on her grave for her birthday and Christmas and for her children to be buried next to her.

I have done preliminary research on what such an endeavor would cost.  The cost is going to be around $5,500.00 that would include removal, transporting, and burial of the vault, funeral director (SC law requires a licensed funeral director to be onsite), legal fees to gain access to the existing gravesite (which I will be blocked from entering do to it being located on private property), and a new tombstone if needed.

The help that my friends, family, and strangers could offer would be so greatly appreciated.  Every penny will be used to fund this project.  All dollars raised by this campaign will be used for this purpose only.  Any additional dollars that are raised above and beyond the cost will be donated to the Trevor Project.  The Trevor Project is a lifeline for LGBT youth that are having suicidal thoughts and/or going through tough mental issues in regards to their sexuality.  Please check-out their website at    www.thetrevorproject.org/
